  1. yes..using a punching motion on the volleyball is illegal.

of course, no catching the ball.

and when going to spike and what not. do NOT touch the center line..or the net. they are both Illegal.

  2. Referees are not supposed to judge the technoque of the contact or the result of the contact ... only the contact itself.  It does not matter how ugly a players form is when they make contact with the ball, only the contact itself.

    TEAM HITS:

    - The team is entitled to a maximum of three hits (in addition to a block contact) to return the ball over the net.  If more than three are used, the team commits the fault of FOUR HITS.

    -  The hits of the team include not only intentional hits by the players , but also the unintentional contacts with the ball.

    CONSECUTIVE CONTACTS:

    -  A player may not hit the ball two times consecutively with the exception that the first hit after a block may be executed by any player including the one who touched the ball during hte block; while blocking provided that the consecutive contacts are made during one action; or if the contact are made simultaneously.

    SIMULTANEOUS CONTACTS:

    - Two or three players may touch the ball at the same moment.  When two (three) team-mates touch the ballsimultaneously, it is counted as two (three) hits (with the exception of blocking).  If they both reach for the ball, but only one of them touches it, one hit is counted.  A collision of players does not constitue a fault.  When two players touch the ball simultaneously over the net (a joust) and the ball remains in play, the team receiving the ball is entitled to another three hits.  If a jousted ball goes out of bounds, it is the fault of the team on the opposite side.

    ASSISTED HIT:

Within the playing area, a player is not permitted to take supportfrom a team-mateor any structure/ object in order to reach the ball.   However, a player who is about to commit a fault (touch the net or cross the centre line) may be stopped or held back by a team-mate.

    Characteristics of the hit:

    -  The ball may touch any part of the body.

    -  The ball must be hit, not caught and/or thrown.  It can rebound in any direction.

    -  The ball may touch various parts of the body, provided that the contacts take place simultaneously.

    Exceptions:

    -  At blocking, consecutive contacts may be made by one or more blockers provided that the contacts occur during one action.

    -  At the first contact of a team, the ball may contact various parts of the body consecutively provided that the contacts occur during one action.

    Faults in playing the ball:

    -  FOUR HITS: a team hits the ball four times before returning it over the net.

    -  ASSISTED HIT: a player takes support from a team-mate or any structure/object in order to reach the ballwithijn the playing area.

    -  CATCH: a player does not "hit" the ball, and the ball is caught and/or thrown.

DOUBLE CONTACT: a player hits the ball twice in succession or the ball contacts various parts of his /her body in succession (except for first contact after a block and the teams first contact)

As ypu can see, there is nothing in the rule book that states how the contact has to be made.  It only describes the characteristics of the contacts.

So using a fist is legal.  However, a fist contact can still be called a playing fault if the ball comes to rest on the fist or if their are two seperate attempts two play the ball in succesion.

Slapping a ball with an open hand (palm up) from underneath ball is also legal provided that the ball does not come to rest on the hand, it must be hit in a way that the ball bounces cleanly off the hand.

Volleying a ball form below your chest "can" also be legal along with volleying a ball underhand with your pinkies together.  I say this because it is technically possible within the rules, it is just extremley difficult to do without committing any faults like double contact or a carry.

I hope this helped answer your questions.

  3. actually... u can make a punching like motion at the ball... any attempt at the ball is legal, given that it is a solid contact and u do not "lift" or double contact the ball. u can actually legally contact the ball with any part of ur body (foot, leg, thigh, shoulder, head, elbow, back...etc) . The only exception is that contacts made from other body parts/ contacts outside of the tradiotional pass/bump, set, or attack are not deliberate.

For instance: u can complete and make a legal contact with a volleyball with ur foot... given, u do not deliberately go and kick the ball... these are accidental contacts that are allowed. Like I said, any contact is legal, even tho it may not be a traditional one, just as long and its a solid contact.

I'm goin to assume u know what a 'lift' is... if not: a volleyball may not be at rest for any amount of time while being played. Men usually get in trouble with this one while trying to set. Also, Any attempt to set has to attempted above the forhead/eye level and attempted in an upward motion. If the attempt falls below this area, the ref may call a lift. A lift may be called if a player makes a 'lame' attempt at attacking the ball. 'Lame' meaning the player attempts at attacking the ball over hand and the ball comes to rest in their hand for a moment (usually caused by a limp hand). For girls and women and lift will be called if there is a contact made with their chest or in their chest area b/c it usually makes a low thud.. and well... b/c its squishy in that area... they'll call a lift...

Double contact is usually called on a player in their attempt to set. This is when the players hands do not simultaneously contact the ball. The players hands contact the ball at different times.

  4. Referees are told to look for 2 things.  Over control and lack of control.  Over control is when you have control of the ball for too long as in a lift or carry.  Lack of control is when you are called for the double hit.

Playing the ball with various parts of the body is legal depending on the rules you are asking about.

NFSHSA governs the junior high and high schools.  The NFSHSA does not allow any contact below the waist, even if it is accidental.

USAV and NCAA covers the club and the women's college rules.  Those sets of rules allow contact with any part of the body, including intentionally kicking the ball.

Punching the ball is legal, unless the referee thinks you having control problems.  Your coach may have a different idea.  Depending on the situation, your coach may invite you over to the bench to talk about you punching the ball.

  5. yes. there are wuite a few and some my sound confusing, but i have played for 3 1/2 years.

first, yes...punching like motions are usualy illegal.  also, some refs. think that hitting the ball with one hand is illegal...thats how my school and opposing teams play.  another illegal hit is if you hit the ball with 2 hands, but the hands dont hit the ball at the same time.  do not touch the net or cross over the line in the senter at any time!!!!!!!!! that is an automatic out!  obviously, you may not catch the ball...EVEN IF IT GOES OUT! i made that mistake once...not too nive out there than!  after the ball touches the ground if its out, then you may pick it up.if you hit the ball more than 3 times on your side is another illegal move.  i can only think of one more illegal hit and that would be if you or you teammate hit it 2 times before passing. (you can not hit 2 times in a row...that makes more sense.  most refs. like it when you either throw the ball to him or roll the ball under the net when the serve switched to the other team.

hope i helped!! email me if you need more!

  6. "Punching" the ball is not illegal, but u have to make sure ur fist is completely closed.
