The case regarding Marjorie Knoller just came up again--she's the one whose dog mauled Dianne Whipple to death in SF around 2001. A jury found Knoller guilty of 2nd degree murder, but the judge disagreed and reduced the charge to manslaughter. Knoller was released after 2 years. But pressure is on to send her back to jail for murder.

Knoller was returning from walking her Canary Island dogs when they attacked Whipple, who was returning from shopping, in the hall of their apt. building. Knoller claims she tried to shield Whipple from the dog attack, but K. went into her apt, closed the door, and left Whipple in the hall to bleed to death for over 15 minutes, never calling 911, never getting a pot or pan to hit her dog with to stop the assault. She said it wasn't her fault that her dog mauled Whipple to death.

The judge overturned the jury's verdict, reducing it to manslaughter, saying that it didn't rise to the legal definition of murder.

Do you think Knoller should go back to jail to serve time for murder?

  1. I recall the case.

Not clear on all the details from memory, but she and hubby were keeping the dogs while acting as attorney )and possibly w***e, to a group of white supremacists in prison.

IIRC the issue was whether they knew or should have known the dog was violent, and if they participated or enabled its violent training.

Surely there was more then just a level of negligence involved.

Can you provide me via email some links to the updating of the case?

One reason I will never forget the case was because of how it devastated the nascent California lacrosse community - the victim was a lacrosse coach by trade.
