Question:

Legal effects of registering US marriage at Chilean consulate?

Does anyone know the reasons I would or would not want to register my US marriage at the Chilean consulate? My fiancée is from Chile, and we plan on living in the US (at least for now). I can find lots of information on the process of how to register, but not what it signifies legally. Does anyone know or have experience with this?

  1. You register at the consulate so that they know where your fiancee is. . . It might also help if you had certain legal problems but being an illegal is certainly not one of them.

Why don't you call and ask?  Incidentally, last time I spoke with the Chilean consul he was uninformed, uncaring, prejudiced, and a survivor from the Pinochet regime fondling his iron rice bowl.

  2. to make your marriage legal, there are rules to follow when marrying a citizen of another country.

i have found an article on this subject but in Spanish,

go to this page, and read it,

    http://www.registrocivil.cl/f_matrimonio...

    very informative.
