Question:

Legal rights in housing situation?

I was going to attend a college this year, but couldn't get a loan for my tuition; I paid for the housing already and now they're saying, even though I'm not attending, that I can't live there and I have to pay for this semester (4,250 bucks!) and next semester. Can they do this?

  1. It sounds like this is not housing through the college but off-campus housing.  If that's the case, then you are probably stuck with the lease.  The landlords probably rent to other than students, so you could move there and get a job.  I'm not saying that's practical; I'm saying that's their position on it.  Read the lease you signed and check your state's tenant laws on breaking a lease.

So, yes, it sounds like they can do that.
