Question:

Legal to drive damaged car?

I live in the UK and my car was involved in an accident and as a result the drivers side front and rear doors were damaged. The doors are still operable and work okay. However with the drivers door you have to pull/push a little harder to open it as it sticks a little now due to the damage. Is it still legal to drive. The doors stay shut and are working as normal but I am a bit wary of being stopped by police who may notice the damage and then take action. The rear door closes fully but is bent alittle meaning their is a light gap. Where it meets the frame (but it does still securley close).

  1. Provided that the vehicle is still drive-able, I can't see why it would be illegal. If you still have all your lights and safety features in proper working order, a damaged door shouldn't be a problem. Granted I'm not familiar with UK traffic laws, but I've seen some severely screwed up cars driving around here [Florida, US] and I've never heard of anyone being in legal trouble for a banged up car.

You should be fine. If you're really worried, look for UK traffic laws concerning damaged vehicles... but I really can't imagine a law enforcement officer caring if your car's been damaged [if it's still perfectly driveable, that is]. Doesn't seem like a top priority for them... unless you live in a town like Sandford from "Hot Fuzz" in which case I would worry :P

    Good luck with it!

  2. As you stated, as long as the door will open and close then it would not be illegal.
