Question:

Legally, can a ULC ordained minister perform a ceremony in Wisconsin?

My fiance are not religious. We were planning on going to the courthouse for our marriage, but wanted our parents there. If we invite our parents, we'd have to invite our siblings (I have four, he has two) and their families. So, for room, we decided we would have an off-site wedding. We were trying to figure out a pastor, but since we don't attend church, we thought we'd get a friend or family member to officiate.

Has anyone gotten a friend or family member ordained through the ULC.org (or .net) and had them legally perform the ceremony? Is it even legal here in Wisconsin? I'm in Milwaukee County. I simply don't understand the legal vocabulary. Thanks.

  1. we found our officiant online and she was ordained ulc (california). we got married offsite just the two of us by the sea... it was beautiful.

    congratulations!!

to be double sure, i would contact your local county clerk recorder.

  2. see if your state requires them all to get licensed too - in ohio there is a database that has everyone listed that is allowed to perform a ceremony.

  3. Absolutely possible. My suggestion is to contact the county clerk and check with them.  Don't assume that the information on any site is current law.

However, let me point out a paragraph that the couple can also be an officiant:

The 2 parties themselves, by mutual declarations that they take each other as husband and wife, in accordance with the customs, rules and regulations of any religious society, denomination or sect to which either of the parties may belong.

  4. Check with the county clerks office, I believe ULC can perform weddings in WI.
