Legendary Steve Davis excited to play as 2011 Brazil Masters commences at Costão do Santinho Resort
Living legend of snooker world, England’s Steve Davis is currently in Brazil to take part in the 16-men invitational non-ranking event of 2011 Brazil Masters. The event is set to commence on Thursday, September 15, at Costão do Santinho Resort in Florianópolis.
The veteran is quite excited to play in Brazil and believes Brazil Masters will open doors for the game of snooker in South America.
The 2011 Brazil Masters snooker tournament will feature some of the best snooker guns from around the world including current Shanghai Masters champion, Mark Selby, former world champion, Stephen Hendry, former world champion, Peter Ebdon, 2011 Australian
Goldfields Open champion, Stuart Bingham and veteran Steve Davis to name a few.
The Nugget, Davis, has returned to Brazil after 30 years. He played against Brazil’s top snooker player, Rui Chapéu in a challenge match 30 years ago which attracted 40 million TV audiences to watch the game. The 54-year-old Davis believes Brazil could be
the key area to expand the game of snooker across South America and the globe.
While speaking to local media about his excitement of the tournament, Davis said, “It's great to see all the fans in Brazil and to be back here after all these years, both as a player and as an ambassador for snooker.”
He further added, “People in the UK don't realise how popular the game is worldwide. It's spreading like fire across many areas of the globe like China, Europe and South America. It would be fantastic to have a regular tournament in Brazil every year, even
if I'm not involved as a player. They have a very good player now in Igor Figueiredo and hopefully he will be the first of many.”
About his previous visit to Brazil and a match against Rui Chapéu, Davis told, “I watched some clips of it on Youtube recently which was amazing. It was a great experience because I had no idea what I was going into. To be honest I expected it to be a holiday
and that I would win easily.”
