Pernell is the best fighter in his weight ( whatever weight he is in at the time ). only age slowed him down. no one in the world wanted to fight him ... he was too good for his own good. trinidad was the only fighter to really stop him and that's almost at a time when Pernell was very much of age. just think about this ... chavez in his prime could not stop him. de la hoya in his prime could not stop him. he lost both those fights on paper but most if not all experts believe that Pernell won those 2 fights. Pernell all the way !!!

Whitaker all day. . . . however, truth be told, Whitaker's PRIME could be argued to have happened at lightweight.  

He was still CRAZY good at welter, though.

At 147 Whitaker slowed a bit.  He was actually better at 135-140.  I still think he would have enough to defeat Taylor.  Taylor was a bit stronger and also faster.  However, his foot movement was no where near Pernell's .

Its easy to wonder how, if a guy is faster AND stronger than his opponent how can he lose.  Simple.  People often mistook Pernell's brashness for foolishness.  He was a very intelligent fighter and expremely hard to hit even close up.  I'll never forget the "8 Punch" combination he made Oscar miss.  Who misses an 8 punch combination?

Taylor, despite his talent, was not a very smart fighter. He often allowed his ego to get the better of him.  Whitaker is guilty of this too but he never allowed it to take him out of his game plan.  

The difference is that Taylor would be more concerned with proving something.  Whitaker would just be more concerned with winning.
