As a result of grabbing early breaks in the first set, Gilles secured a break point at 4-3. The French tennis player was up with 5-3, who was assisted by a forehand by David which went wide. Simon, as a result, prevented the break point serving for the set, and then finished off as David fired a forehand.
During the second set, David came back in the game with a lead of 3-1, taking advantage of some wayward backhands from Gilles. The wild card entrant wasted no time to grab a set point and tied the match with a strong service return at 5-2.
Nalbandian although got a break edge at 2-0 as well as 4-2 in the final set. However, he couldn’t manage to take any significant advantage. A stupid mistake was committed by Simon when he missed a simple forehand which provided David with a lead of 5-3. David later on finished off the match with an ace to power through to the next round.
