This http://grants.gov/ is the federal government's main grant portal. You'll find links there that will answer any questions you should have about grant programs sponsored by the US government. If you're looking for state grant information, you would need to find the equivalent site for your particular state.

Generally speaking, the federal government does not provide grants to individuals. Most grant money goes to organizations and businesses. For example, the federal government has funds available to organizations that study bats in Southeast Utah, or restore lands in federal parks. A typical applicant is a university program or a  large general contracting company.

One of the few areas where the federal government does offer a large amount of individual grants is federal financial aid to college students. If an applicant and his family have extreme financial need, the government's Pell or FSEOG grant programs provide "free" funds that can only be applied towards the cost of education at a qualified institution of higher learning. There are a few other, less well known, student aid grants, as well.

There is a common misconception that the federal government has grants for people who want to buy first homes, or people who need help paying bills - there are certainly assistance programs like that, but these aren't government grant programs. You would really need to contact your state housing agency or consumer affairs department to find out more about those programs.
