ok so i have a betta and i want to build him a lego shelter, so if i sterilize the lego with hot water will it be safe? Also i heard bettas are slow moving if at all in cold unfiltered water. I have a 2 gallon tank with an aerator and he seems pretty active but i just got him today. He loves the bubbles and stones but will he get boring if i dont get a filter. I cant get a heater becuase the tank is plastic.

  1. you ur right...don't use the lego...besides I dont think just boiling it will suffice and make it safe for ur betta...a cheap filter is always good to keep the water quality good...change the water at least twice a week..or every 4 days...this will keep him good...actually a 4-5 gallon tank with filter and heater is the best home for a betta..

  2. As Lego is safe for kids to chew on it wont harm your fish any more than a plastic tank or filter. It's probably the same plastic that filters etc are made from anyway.

The sharp edges - never seen a sharp  rock or a pointy stick?

If you want to build a Lego castle, go for it. Dont sweat the steralising thing, you are going to put it into the tank with your hand right? 1 million bacteria will hop on then. A fish tank is not a sterile place, so dont worry about a few germs.

  3. The Lego's might work.... i mean they are slobbering child safe maybe they are tank safe? but don't rule out that they might degrade in your tank and release toxins.

your Betta definitely will slow down in colder water.

Betta's do need a heaters they are tropical fish they may "survive" in cold water but they wont thrive and even if your tank is plastic you can get one! just make sure it doesn't touch anything plastic. one like this will work.  i have a 3 gallon plastic tank and it never burns anything.

it'll work under gravel. just make sure to put gravel under the heater and on top of it to unsure it doesn't stay in contact with the plastic...

BTW if you don't have a filter i would invest in one. This one is great! and it has an airpump that can add oxygen to your water!

    good luck!

  4. nah i wouldn't do it. cause it might release toxins into the water. u never want to put something in ur aquarium that isn't made specifically for aquariums. =D
