Leicester Tigers extend Steve Mafi's contract – Aviva Premiership
Steve Mafi has been rewarded with a refreshed two year contract after his impressive performances in Aviva Premiership for Leicester Tigers in a part time contract. The young 21 year old flanker and lock will be playing for Leicester Tigers till 2013 at
Welford Road, while Tigers are having one of the best seasons and are consistently growing as a team.
Leicester has also been reported to be in links with second rower for Worcester, Graham Kitchener. Worcester confirmed recently that Kitchener will be leaving the club after this season. Mafi was supposed to play in Italy but the idea went ignored before
the championship even started and Leicester called the youngster for the Premiership.
Premiership caused Tigers a lot of injuries making them loose the second rower, which was opened a position for Mafi. Since then the 21 year old lock has grown in the top class club and established himself as a significant member of the club. He has made
18 appearances for the club so far.
Mafi spoke to media and told, “I am here for a further two years and I am actually pleased with that and the choice I made to come here. I wasn't expectant to play in as many fixtures as I have but I am glad to have got that game time.”
He added, “All of the boys have assisted me with staying in and off the field too. When I first came, I lived with Craig Newby at his residence and he was great and gave me a lot of courage. It's huge to have him captain the team at this point in time with
a few of the players away.”
Mafi also credited Ben Herring and Richard Blaze, the assistant coaches for the consistent assistance and help. He said it’s their dedication from the core of their heart that resulted in his improvement of individual skills.
Richard Hill, the head coach for Worcester has affirmed the departure of Kitchener. Tigers will surely be looking forward to get him on their side.
Hill said, “We're clearly saddened that Graham will depart at the conclusion of the season. Graham is an exceptional professional and I have no hesitation in saying he will prolong to carry out himself in the right way and do everything he probably can to
help the club gain promotion.”
