Leicester Tigers tame Ulster by 20-9 in Heineken Cup clash – Rugby News
Leicester Tigers crushed Ulster by a healthy difference of 20-9 in Heineken Cup 2011-12 match played on November 19, at Welford Road, Leicester. Tigers trailed in the start but they made an impressive comeback immediately after that and never gave their
rivals an opportunity to regain the lead.
Matt Smith scored the only try of the match for Tigers, whereas Toby Flood elevated the winners with five penalty goals and remained the highest individual scorer of the competition with 15 under his belt. On the other hand, Ian Humphreys contributed for
Ulster with 9 points but could save his side from hideous defeat.
During the contest, Humphreys sparked his team Ulster, with an early three pointer and thus gave them a psychological boost. Ulster side was playing well in the game until the Tigers were awarded a penalty in the seventh minute. The opportunity was availed
by Toby Flood and the equation was levelled to 3-3.
The match remained hanging in the balance through to the end of first half as both sides scored 9-9 points. An interesting battle of individual superiority between Flood and Humphreys gave the spectators a lot to cheer during first half. However, Humphreys,
despite his desperate efforts could not add anything to his teams’ total in the second half. Leicester Tigers increased their lead to 12-9 shortly after the resumption of play.
Ulster were left chasing Smith helplessly in the 66th minute of the match, when he scored the well received try. This was the turning point of the match as visiting side looked broken and off the colours afterwards. Victory against Ulster has
helped Tigers to retain their top spot among the other Pool 3 teams. They are dominating the tables with 8 points after two outings. The next round of ongoing Heineken Cup 2011-12 will kick off on December 9, in Belfast.
