Leicester thrash the Scarlets
Leicester had too much power for the Scarlets as they won their Heineken Cup match 46-10 at Welford Road.
The Leicester tries came from Martin Castrogiovanni, Ben Youngs, Tom Waldron and Geordan Murphy, while England international Tom Croft scored two.
English out-half Toby Flood kicked two penalties and was successful with five of the six conversions.
The Scarlets could only manage a Morgan Stoddart try in the opening few minutes, before they were overrun by a rampant Leicester side.
Welsh out-half Stephen Jones scored the remaining five points that the Scarlets scored.
The Welsh side started brightly in the opening exchanges. Rhys Priestland would have sent Sean Lamont through for a certain try had Leicester’s Alesana Tuigali not deliberately knocked on the ball.
The penalty earned the winger a yellow card and 10 minutes in the sin bin. The Scarlets took advantage of the extra man and Lamont launched a wonderful attack from inside his own 22. The move resulted
in Stoddart crossing the line for the opening try.
Jones added two points with the conversion, but from then on it was all Leicester.
The Aviva Premiership side dominated the scrum and line out and the Welsh team could not cope with the Tigers physicality.
The Scarlets were aggrieved at Leicester’s reply two minutes later. Martin Castrogiovanni scored as he was pushed over by the Leicester pack, but there was a clear forward pass missed by the referee in
the build up to the try. Flood converted to make the score 7-7.
The Scarlets managed to keep out the Leicester attack with some stout defending, while two Flood penalties and one by Jones gave Leicester a three point lead at the interval.
However, the Scarlets could not hold out for long in the second half as Young crossed after some Leicester pressure.
The Scarlets failed to defend a quick free kick by Young who fed Waldron for a simple try to increase Leicester’s lead.
The Tigers secured a bonus point after Murphy intercepted a pass before finding Croft who dashed over the line.
Leicester added a fifth try after Sean Lamont was caught in possession in his own 22. Some good work by the Leicester forwards saw them turn over possession and the ball was thrown out wide before Croft
took a simple pass in space. The forward jogged over the line for his second try of the game.
Murphy completed Leicester’s dominance by charging onto a Billy Twelvetrees popped pass before touching down to the delight of the home fans.
