http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Leicestershire-c807 177 v Derbyshire 5/0 (3.0 ov) - Derbyshire trail by 172 runs with 10 wickets remaining in the 1st innings
Derbyshire pacer, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Tim-Groenewald-c2670, had a fantastic day as he completed a five-wicket haul against Leicestershire on the first day of the four-day match between the two teams in the ongoing County Championship Division Two tournament at Grace Road, Leicester.
The day, however, ended on a disappointing note as rain ruined Derbyshire’s innings, who scored just five runs in reply to the first innings total of 177 posted by Leicestershire. And now the team trail by 172 runs with all wickets in hand.
Had rain not intervened, play might have carried on, giving fans an opportunity to witness some daring batting from Derbyshire, who had a tremendous day in the field before putting on the pads.
Earlier, the day began with Leicestershire winning the toss and choosing to bat first. However, apart from winning the toss, nothing went their way as they lost three of their top batsmen with only seven runs on the board as AP Palladino took a hat-trick to earn the scalps of MA Thornely (6), EJH Eckersley (0) and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/RR-Sarwan-c2371 (0).
This early loss of top-order batsmen was disastrous for the team which actually put them in a vulnerable position from where they could just hope to climb back in the game instead of dominating it.
Meanwhile opener MAG Boyce was given some commendable support by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Jon-Lewis-c1726 Cobb as the two desperately tried to save the team from complete annihilation.
Nonetheless, with 66 runs on the board, Cobb departed after hammering a knock of 30 runs.
Derbyshire hit jackpot when the grabbed the prized wicket of Boyce, who lost his own after smacking a knock of 50 runs, leaving his side standing on a total of 95 runs.
GP http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Smith-c90598 and WA White then lost their wickets cheaply as they walked back to the pavilion after contributing nine and five runs.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Kadeer-Ali-c1757 then stood strong as he belted a fabulous innings of 48 runs to help his side reach a total to fight for.
