Leigh Howard looking ahead for a positive start with Team GreenEdge
Australian professional cyclist, Leigh Howard, will be seen in GreenEdge colors for the coming season. The cyclist is looking forward to a promising season with the team in the coming season.
The 22-year-old started riding with amateur teams and represented Geelong CC, Australian Institute of Sport and Team Toshiba towards the start of his career.
He joined Team HTC-Columbia to start his professional career in 2010 and secured a number of victories with the American squad.
Leigh was optimistic about his future with HTC-Highroad but could not fulfill his dreams as the team announced its demise towards the end of 2011.
Seeing his team leaving the professional scene was hurtful and signing up with GreenEdge was “a very painful decision,” he briefed.
While commenting on his previous team, Howard told Radsport-News.com, “Such a special team, because in the end we were all friends and every race was a lot of fun. Nobody got upset when they had to ride for someone else, because they were helping a friend
and teammate”.
The Australian is considered to be a rising young star of cycling and his inclusion in Shayne Bannan’s team can be really help him in achieving new career goals.
Major wins of his career so far include Stage1, 4 and 7 victories at the Tour of Tasmania 2007. Leigh won the Australian National Track Championships in 2008.
He also claimed overall victories at the UIV Cup Amsterdam and the Cup Munich 2008. The cyclist has a total number of three gold and four silver medals to his credit.
Howard’s 2011 season was dominated by crashes. He stated, “Two bad crashes at the start of the year tore up my season planning and then unfortunately nothing else worked out perfectly”.
The Australian squad will ride the 2012 season as a world tour team. Leigh has shown interest to help his teammate, Mathew Goss, at the Milan-San Remo.
The young sprinter will ride along a number of experienced cyclists during his second year as a professional.
Leigh stated that he will continue to ride track race along with the road events. Team GreenEdge has almost 90% of Australian cyclists on its side, which makes it easier for the Australian cyclist to adjust in the new squad.
