Leigh Howard of HTC Highroad joins Green Edge - Cycling News
Shayne Bannan of team Green Edge has further strengthened his team as the Australian rider Leigh Howard has been made part of GreenEdge crew for the coming seasons. Howard is currently riding for team HTC Highroad who has announced their demise by the end
of this year. Hence, the 21-year-old had no other choice but to select a new home for 2012.
The two time Madison World Champion has hence decided to join the Australian team GreenEdge who is looking ahead to acquire a UCI Pro licence in the next season. Leigh started cycling at the age of 10 and joined the Australian cycling team when he was 16.
He rode for team HTC Columbia in his first professional race and won stage four at Tour of Oman beating Tom Boonen, Tyler Farrar and Daniele Bennati. He is a qualified automobile electrician but never took it as a profession since he started cycling professionally
in 2010.
His HTC team-mate Matthew Goss has also signed with team GreenEdge for 2012 and Howard is looking ahead to continue his partnership with his old colleague. He also mentioned that he will avail the opportunity to learn from Robbie McEwen as he said, “I’ve
spoken to Robbie a couple of times already about his involvement with the team next year and I think his role is going to benefit me a lot.”
He is pleased to join GreenEdge and mentioned that he always wanted to join the team and have finally availed the opportunity as he said, “GreenEdge was always my first choice of team but I had a lot of offers at the table.”
The Australian also mentioned that he is looking forward to participating in the Tour de France 2012 and target the stage wins along with support to the leader Matthew Goss. Team Green Edge has already signed 20 cyclists which includes, Keukeleire, Jack
Bobridge, Simon Clarke, Baden Cooke, Simon Gerrans, Matthew Goss, Robbie McEwen, Travis Meyer, Stuart O Grady, Matt Wilson, Michael Albasini, Fumiyuki Beppu, Jens Keukeleire, Sebastian Langeveld, Jens Mouris, Daniel Teklehaymanot, Svein Tuft, Tomas Vaitkus,
Pieter Weening and Leigh Howard have secured their positions at the roster.
