Leinhart signs with Houston, Chargers fail to trade Jackson
Despite agreeing to terms on a new contract with an unnamed team, Vincent Jackson is still a San Diego Charger.
According to ESPN.com the Chargers gave Jackson and his agent permission to discuss terms on a contract extension with the unnamed team on Saturday. However, talks between the two teams reached stalemate over what San Diego would receive in return for Jackson.
Jackson has been holding out of the Chargers’ pre-season in a bid to secure a new improved contact from the team. That strategy has yet to work, with both parties being unable to come to a compromise resulting in the wide receiver being shopped around the league.
The 27-year-old is reportedly holding out for a five-year $50million contract, with $30million of that in guaranteed money. He has also stated his intention of sitting out the whole season if he isn’t offered what he thinks is fair value.
San Diego gave the Seattle Seahawks permission to talk to Jackson earlier this year, but the Seahawks failed to an agreement with the receiver.
Jackson had 68 receptions with 1,167 yards and nine touchdowns last season.
Elsewhere, the Houston Texans have signed free agent quarterback Matt Leinhart, after he was released by the Arizona Cardinals on Saturday.
According to reports, the Texans have jumped at the chance to sign Leinhart being one of the only teams to contact the former Heisman Trophy winner. The 27-year-old will likely become back-up for Matt Schuab who had the best year of his career last season throwing for 4770 yards, and 29 touchdowns.
Leinhart has agreed a one-year deal with Houston and will take a physical, sign the contract and join the team today.
