Leisel Jones and Brenton Rickard win in Adelaide: Final day – Australian Short Course Championships
Final session on day three of the 2011 Australian Short Course Championships ended with several scintillating performances in Adelaide, on Sunday, July 3.
Leisel Jones won the gold medal in the Women’s 50m breast-stroke meet, while Brenton Rickard captured the Men’s 200m breast-stroke title.
Firstly, the Olympic champion, Leisel Jones, took home the Women’s 50m breast-stroke crown with a victorious time of 29.92 seconds, whereas, Leisto Pickett wound up second in 30.26 seconds. The third place went to Olivia Halicek in 30.88 seconds.
While speaking about his effort in the meet, Jones said, “I think the altitude training is working.”
Saman Marshall wound up fourth in 30.89 seconds, while Haywood earned fifth in 30.98 seconds. Tessa Wallace finished sixth in 31.26 seconds, whereas, Libby Forbes settled seventh in 31.28 seconds. The eighth place went to Amelia Dahlitz in 31.53 seconds.
Brenton Rickard grabbed the Men’s 200m breast-stroke crown with a victorious time of 2 minutes and 08.02 seconds. Nikola Pregelj wound up second in 2 minutes and 10.93 seconds, whereas, Craig Tucker earned third place honours in 2 minutes and 11.04 seconds. Chris Halliley finished fourth in 2 minutes and 11.54 seconds, while Jerem Saunders settled fifth after the touched the finishing wall in a time of 2 minutes and 13.51 seconds.
The Women’s 200m freestyle title was taken over by another Aussie swimmer, Kylie Palmer in 1 minute and 55.07 seconds.
After the race, Palmer said, “I'm really happy with that time and I'm in a really good place at the moment. That swim is good for my confidence for a good swim at Worlds and leading into the Olympic Trials.” Palmer secured the gold medal in the Women’s 4x200m freestyle finale at the 2008 Olympic Games, in Beijing.
Kelly Stubbins secured silver medal in 1 minute and 56.47 seconds, whereas, Jessi Morrison earned bronze in a time of 1 minute and 56.63 seconds. Ami Matsuo finished fourth in 1 minute and 57.68 seconds, as Belind Parslow grabbed fifth spot in 1 minute and 58.15 seconds.
Earlier, Kenneth To snared the Men’s 100m Individual Medley crown with an encouraging time of 51.93 seconds, whereas, Jessicah Schipper clinched the Women’s 200m butterfly title with a sterling time of 2 minutes and 06.27 seconds.
Additionally, Christopher Wright won the Men’s 100m butterfly meet in a time of 51.30 seconds. All the Aussie swimmers have been preparing hard to gear themselves up for the upcoming FINA 2011 World Championships, this July.
