Leiston Pickett conquers Women’s 100m breaststroke heats – EnergyAustralia Swimming Championships
Leiston Pickett of Southport Olympic Swimming Club impressed in the preliminary rounds of Women’s 100m breaststroke on second day of the 2012 EnergyAustralia Swimming Championships at the South Australia Aquatic and Leisure Centre in Adelaide on Friday, March 16.
The 20-year-old Pickett served notice of her talent by seizing top finish in the two-lap breaststroke discipline with the timing of 1 minute and 07.77 seconds. Her tremendous effort placed her 0.35 seconds ahead of Sarah Katsoulis, who secured second finish in the event by touching the wall with the timing of 1 minute and 08.12 seconds.
The third position of the discipline was obtained by Leisel Jones of Unattached, who qualified into the finals by submitting 1 minute and 08.33 seconds.
Next was the qualification round of Men’s 100m backstroke, where Benjamin Treffers of Burley Griffin dictated terms to his opponents by clinching top fastest finish with the timing of 54.59 seconds.
The 20-year-old Treffers crushed hopes of his strongest competitor, Ryan Pini of PNG, who stayed almost one seconds slower from him and tapped the finishing blockade with the timing of 55.30 seconds. He was trailed by Joshua Beaver of Tigersharks, who ended his swim in third fastest place and settled on the wall by clocking 55.46 seconds.
Subsequently, Kylie Palmer of Chandler stunned the aquatic crowd by occupying top position in the Women’s 400m freestyle. The 22-year-old Chandler posted a time of 4 minutes and 09.12 seconds to enter the final round.
With her impressive performance, she remained nearly one second faster from her strongest challenger, Remy Fairweather of Kawana Waters, who tapped the finishing wall with the timing of 4 minutes and 10.28 seconds for second qualifying position.
Bronte Barratt of St Peters Western Swimming Club was the third best swimmer of the discipline as she remained 0.35 seconds behind her former finisher and posted a time of 4 minutes and 10.63 seconds.
The session came to an end after the conclusion of all listed events whereas these finalists will face each other in the next rounds of their exclusive events, where the winners will confirm their spot in the Australian team to the 2012 London Olympic Games.
