Lenka Wienerova stuns Olivia Rogowska in the second round qualies – Brussels Open 2012
A stunning outcome was witnessed in the second round qualifiers of the Brussels Open, as the seventh seeded Australian, Olivia Rogowska, bowed out to the 24-year-old unseeded Slovak opponent, Lenka Wienerova, on Sunday. The 263rd ranked Slovakian went through three taxing sets before settling the final score line at 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, to reach the qualifying competition of the tournament.
Being a part of the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International Tour clay-court swing, the contest was featured on the outdoor courts of the Royal Primerose Tennis Club in Brussels, Belgium. The 24-year-old Slovakian exhibited a brilliant display of her clay-court skills to hunt down the world number 123, Rogowska, in a stunning fashion. She struck early in the match by bagging the opening set but then went through a temporary slump in the middle parts of the contest to let the seventh seed Aussie back in the game. Wienerova made a cracking comeback in the decisive third set and stood focused right through the end of the match to come out as the winner.
The seventh seed contender could deliver just 59 per cent of her first serve on target, coughing seven double faults and securing 35 out of 58 points on it. She had 19 break opportunities in the entire matchup but she cashed in just seven of them to finish on the losing side in the end. On the other hand, the unseeded Slovakian underdog had a phenomenal serve precision of 77 per cent in contest and she nailed eight out of 15 break points to get the better of her seeded opponent. Wienerova also spilled out nine double faults but compensated very well for them by clinching 52 out of 90 first serve points en route to victory.
Wienerova will have to go through the top seeded Pole contender, Urszula Radwanska, in the qualifying competition before earning a spot in the main draw of the Brussels Open. Radwanska had to recover from being a set down against America’s Alexa Glatch, in the second round qualies and settled the final score line at 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-2, to made it through to the final round.
