Lennox Lewis’ April Fools’ prank considered brutal by fans – Boxing News
Former WBC World Heavyweight Champion, Lennox Lewis announced via his website and twitter that his rematch with the current WBC Champion Vitali Klitschko has been confirmed for September 29 to be held in Hamburg, Germany. Later on, Lewis came up saying that
the announcement was an April Fools’ prank and that he has ‘great’ sense of humour. However, his fans are pretty furious over the situation and they find it difficult to believe that for a while they actually got excited for the match.
Some news sources have also reported that this was probably a way of checking public interest for the fight. The post on Lewis’ website read, “After a 9 year absence from the ring, former heavyweight king Lennox Lewis will return to the ring in what could
be one of the most anticipated rematches in boxing history. Lennox will square off for the second time with current heavyweight champ, Vitali Klitschko in Hamburg, Germany on September 29th for Klitschko’s WBC heavyweight title.”
The announcement actually worked for Lewis’ fans since they have been demanding a rematch for long. Since last year, Lewis has been speaking about a possible rematch against Vitali Klitschko to prove the latter was actually beaten. Their only encounter in
2003 ended up in a mess. Vitali got a cut above his eye due to which he lost via KO in the sixth round. Vitali was not pleased with the decision and he said he could have fought more. Even the crowd wanted the fight to go and thus the booing towards Lewis
and the referee was at its highest. It should be noted here that Vitali was winning on all scorecards and he could have defeated Lewis if the referee had not stopped the fight.
After the web and twitter announcement, which read, “Lennox returns to the ring for Sept. 29th mega fight with Klitschko”, Lewis revealed the prank by tweeting, “Who says I don't have a sense of humour?”
For now, fans of both the fighters are annoyed over Lewis’ ‘sense of humour’ and nobody has taken the prank lightly.
