Lennox Lewis believes defeat can push Pacquiao towards better performances – Boxing News
Former world heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis believes Manny Pacquiao’s knockout loss to Mexican fighter Juan Manuel Marquez can force him to be better in the ring. Pacquiao, who lost to Marquez via sixth round knockout, has supposedly recovered from the
shock.
Through his Twitter, Pacquiao has been speaking to his fans, wishing them Christmas and New Year. While most fans, analysts and fellow fighters believe the Filipino should retire, there are a handful of those who are supporting him to make a comeback. Among
the supporters is Lennox Lewis, a boxing legend who believes Pacquiao still has a lot of fights left in him.
“It depends on how Pacquiao reacts to the loss,” said Lewis. “Is he a broken man or can he admit he made a mistake in the ring and build on that?”
Pacquiao has lost two consecutive fights. Earlier this year, on June 9, Pacquiao lost via controversial loss to Timothy Bradley, a split decision loss that drew much criticism from Pac-man’s fans worldwide. Pacquiao was widely considered the winner of the
show and Bradley was booed for being declared the winner.
However, this month, Juan Manuel Marquez finally gave Pacquiao a loss that no one can defy. The Pac-man was knocked out in the sixth round of their fourth bout.
“A loss can make you look at yourself in a way that victory cannot. It gives you a feeling that inspires you to be better. Gladiators need to experience setbacks because if you can come back from them it shows just how great you are,” Lewis added.
Pacquiao’s wife and his mother have stated on national televisions that they want the Filipino to retire. For Pacquiao’s wife, it was an appalling sight to see her husband lie motionless on the canvas. It was the first time the Pac-man lied face down on
the mat for several seconds without any movements.
Nevertheless, Pacquiao, as the warrior he is, wants to go for a fourth fight against Marquez to prove his mettle. Pacquiao was winning the showdown until he made the mistake of dropping his guard, just when Marquez got the time to throw the ‘perfect punch’.
