Lennox Lewis reckons David Haye could have been the new Muhammad Ali – Boxing news
The Lion, Lennox Lewis, who is the most recent Undisputed World Heavyweight Champion, reckons the current World Boxing Association’s world heavyweight champion David Haye could have been the new Muhammad Ali for his speed.
The 45-year-old British-Canadian pugilist Lewis, who along with Muhammad Ali and Evander Holyfield is the only boxer to have won the heavyweight world championship three times, said he would have loved to see Haye fighting in America.
Lewis mentioned Haye’s fight against Monte Barrett, which was held back in 2008 and was also shown in America.
Lewis revealed he at that time heard a lot of American people saying Haye has almost the same speed as of Muhammad Ali, who is widely considered as one of the greatest heavyweight boxers of all time.
“I'd have loved to see David box in America a lot more,” Lewis said.
“It would have made his popularity bigger and Americans would have been screaming about him. When he boxed Monte Barrett in 2008 it was shown in America and people were asking me about him, saying he was quick like Muhammad Ali.”
In the end Lewis, who won 41 of his 44 fights including 32 by the way of a knockout, commented on today’s boxing. He believes there are no real combatants anymore whereas people want to see somebody who they could compare with the likes of Muhammad Ali.
Though Lewis mentioned the likes of the eight-division world champion, Manny Pacquiao and the five-division world champion, Floyd Mayweather, he remarked people still want to see a good heavyweight boxer.
“People miss having a great heavyweight,” explained Lewis. “The spotlight is on the likes of Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jnr but, when it comes to boxing, people want to see a heavyweight.”
David ‘The Hayemaker’ Haye, who will face the IBF, WBO, IBO and Ring Magazine Champion Wladimir Klitschko this Saturday, July 2, 2011 at the Hamburg’s Imtech Arena in Germany, has announced his retirement after he gets done with Klitschko.
