Lennox Lewis reckons David Haye must do what he did against Nikolai Valuev – Boxing news
Lennox ‘The Lion’ Lewis, who is only the third boxer in the history after Muhammad Ali and Evander Holyfield to win a heavyweight title three times, believes the current World Boxing Association’s World Heavyweight Champion, David Haye, will have to do something
extraordinary to win the bout on July 2, 2011.
David ‘The Hayemaker’ Haye is scheduled against the International Boxing Federation, International Boxing Organisation, World Boxing Organisation and Ring Magazine Champion, Wladimir Klitschko in a unification bout for the heavyweight titles next month at
the Hamburg Arena in Germany.
Lewis, who is the most recent Undisputed World Heavyweight Champion, knows that Dr. Steelhammer Klitschko is one of the best heavyweight boxers out there. Therefore, he thinks the Londoner will have to produce high standards of performance in the ring.
The 30-year-old Haye beat Nikolai Valuev on points after 12 stodgy rounds to become the WBA World Heavyweight Champion on November 7, 2009. Lewis, who has won 41 of his 44 fights including 32 by the way of a knockout, believes Haye only stands a chance if
he produces the same level of performance which he produced against Valuev.
While speaking on his inclusion, he said, “Klitschko is the best right now, he is the man everyone is aiming to get at. What makes me give Haye a chance is what he did against Valuev. He fought a perfect fight, he kept moving, he stayed elusive and in the
final round he almost knocked Valuev out.”
In the end, Lewis admitted the fact that Klitschko has an added advantage of his experience but on the same note, he remarked Haye has both the speed and the power and if he is able to land a proper punch, it can be really devastating.
He said, “He has the speed and the weight in his arms and any shot he hits Klitschko with will be a shocking blow. Klitschko has the bigger advantages but if David is able to stay with his game plan and move and throw combinations he should do very well.”
