Lens size for Canon XTI.?

I have bought a 55mm lens filter for my wife's camera - but I aint sure if thats a 58mm that I should have bought. Any help? I'm a newbie with camera so, please dont hurt me :P

  1. Presuming that the lens on your wife's camera is the 18-55mm, you should purchase the 58mm filter.

    It's an easy mistake to make, since the name of the lens says 55mm.

    Just exchange the filter for the correct size.

    No, 55mm is not the 58mm filter that you should have bought.... It's a 55mm filter that you should not have bought. And you won't be able to "strech" it to fit. Those mounts are exact sizes. You may be able to fit the LARGER filter on smaller lens using a step-up ring, but if you are talking about some basic UV filter it won't be worth the price tag. And again, you can't put a smaller filter on larger lens - or you'll suffer vignetting (blackening of corners) on wide end of the zoom range.

    So return your 55mm filter if the place you bought from accepts returns and get the 58mm one, which would be a correct size for XTI's 18-55mm kit lens.
