Leon Smith supports Andy Murray’s decision of retirement from ATP Tour Finals – Tennis News
Leon Smith, Davis Cup Captain, has backed the decision of British No.1, Andy Murray, on retiring from the tournament.
World No.3, Andy Murray, was defeated by Spanish No.2, David Ferrer, in straight sets 6-4, 7-5. It was the first major upset of the tournament, and it followed with second heartbreaking news for the British fans as Murray hurt
his shoulder during the match against Ferrer and retired from the tournament. He was replaced by World No.9, Janko Tipsarević.
Andy Murray decides to take his time as he rests from the international duty and spends some time at home. He wants to give ample time to his shoulder to recover before the new season starts and he stars in the Brisbane for the
first time in his career.
Head of women and men’s tennis Lawn Association, Smith, liked the decision of Briton No.1 on retiring from the tournament as he said “He's had an amazing year in the slams, he's in good form and that's why you work so hard to get
to these big events. It's a wonderful event for him, in London with his home fans. But it sounds like it's the right decision because once you get a little niggle it can turn into something worse and worse by playing through.”
Smith added that no player should risk their body for any tournament because small injuries can turn into big disasters that can end a player’s career, if not taken seriously. They have to be careful of the fact that they need
to be perfectly fit to be participating in any tournament. It’s not about just playing one tournament and Murray is just 24-year-old and he has a lot of tennis to play in his career.
In an interview about his retirement from the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, Andy Murray said “It's disappointing to finish the year that way, having lost or not qualified for the semis or the final or whatever. But not being
able to play is what's most frustrating.”
Smith was optimistic with his approach and was positive about Murray’s inclusion in the Davis Cup’s next tie against Slovakia that will take place in February, next year. He has not talked to Briton No.1 about this matter and he
thinks it’s not the right time to ask him anything about tennis as he is very disappointed at his retirement from such a mega tournament. But Smith will definitely be consulting about this matter when his showstopper is once again 100% fit.
