Leonard Bundu retains EBU welterweight gold against Antonio Moscatiello - Boxing News
Leonard Bundu, the current EBU (European) welterweight champion, successfully defended his gold against the surging fellow countryman Antonio Moscatiello, by collecting an early fifth round knockout win in a 12-round skirmish held on March 23, 2012.
The ring for the bout was stretched at Palasport EIB Fiera arena situated in Brescia, Lombardia, Italy and the event was promoted by Mario Loreni of Boxe Loreni. The Bundu-Moscatiello bout headlined the pay-per-view whereas the non-title eight-round lightweight
skirmish between Matteo Modugno and Adnan Buharalija co-headlined the Friday night event.
Bundu, 37, was entering in his career’s 28th bout. The Italian number one was on an undefeated win streak and has never lost a bout. He has nailed 26 of his total opponents and collected two draw decisions against Daniele Petrucci and Luciano Abis.
The southpaw Bundu proudly resides at the 12th position in world rankings and recently acquired the European gold Daniele Petrucci after collecting a 12-round unanimous decision in his favour.
This was Leonard’s first European title defence bout and against a fellow country man who was also on a long undefeated win streak but was seriously outshined by Bundu’s experience, Antonio Moscatiello.
Antonio, 29, was entering in his career’s 14th bout. The young Milan hailing Antonio collected nine of his total wins by knockout as compared to Bundu’s seven. The orthodox Antonio, also known as the ‘Big’, had an upper hand in knockout ability but Bundu
was the resilient guy who is famous for dragging the game to the last second of the last round.
The bout kicked off and from the very first round Leonard placed heavy duty jabs that rattled Antonio’s senses. The surging Antonio remained on his foot and did not lose his game eventually moving in to charge Bundu with extreme rage and aggression.
At the end of the bout the whole crowd unanimously praised Antonio for being the aggressor as he kept on moving in towards the defensive and calculative Leonard. Bundu, who was fully utilising his experience, authoritatively controlled the pace of the whole
skirmish and did not allow Antonio to execute any unanticipated moves.
The showdown ended when after the passage of two minutes and five seconds, Leonard threw a huge hefty powerful jab that connected Antonio’s liver and eventually flattened him on the ring floor.
This was Bundu’s eighth knockout win, a win that was dubbed by most as ‘an unorthodox victory for the man who prefers decision victory’. Antonio, on the other hand has collected his career’s first ever lose and now has 13 wins, one lose in total 14 encounters.
