Leonardo Acevedo and Cristobal De Col qualify for Round 4 at Arica World Star Tour
Chile’s Leonardo Acevedo and Peru’s Cristobal De Col moved into the fourth round (Round of 16) at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 3-star Arica World Star Tour presented by Maui and Sons after taking the win in their respective Round 3 (Round
of 32) heats that went down at the reef break of El Gringo in Arica, Chile, on Friday, June 15.
The third heat further sent Chile’s Manuel Selman into the next round of the competition after he finished just behind Acevedo in runner-up place. Chile’s Leon Vicuna and Hawaii’s Landon McNamara rounded out the bottom-two position to find themselves eliminated
from the competition.
The fourth heat saw Brazil’s Ian Gouveia accompany De Col into the next round following his second-place finish. Peru’s Carlo Zapata finished in third place, while Chile’s Diego Medina rounded out the bottom-position, which resulted in their removal from
the contention for the event title.
The intimidating reef break offered barrels lying in the three-to-five foot range during the third day of the competition. The opportunity was there for the surfers to collect big scores, though they had their work cut out for them.
The third heat of Round 3 saw Acevedo utilise his local knowledge of the waves effectively. Locking a mediocre 3.50-point ride in the opening minutes of the heat, he went on to back it up with a 5.75-point wave, thus finishing with a decisive heat-total
of 9.25 points.
Selman accompanied his compatriot into the next round after collecting a couple of scores in the three-point range for a heat-total of 7.40 points.
Vicuna and McNamara had looked promising in the previous rounds of the competition, but seemed out of sorts during their latest challenge. The Chilean surfer finished with a heat-total of 3.40 points, while the Hawaiian surfer rounded out the bottom-position
with a two-wave total of 2.60 points.
The fourth heat featured an impressive performance by De Col. The Peruvian surfer got down to work early in the four-man battle, paddling towards a relatively juicy wave and scoring a 5.50 off it. He soon backed it up with an exquisite 7.50-point ride to
reach a heat-total of 13.00 points. The combined wave-total held up until the end to earn him the win.
Gouveia successfully extended his life in the competition as well, scoring a 6.00 and 3.20 off his best-two waves for a heat-total of 9.20 points and consequently securing the runner-up position.
Zapata finished in third place with a heat-total of 4.15 points, while Medina rounded out the bottom-position with a two-wave total of 3.80 points. Both the surfers found themselves eliminated from the competition field.
