Leonardo Mayer silences Rogerio Dutra Silva in quarterfinals – Uruguay Open 2011 CH
Argentinean Leonardo Mayer eliminated Brazilian Rogerio Dutra Silva in the quarterfinals of the men’s singles competition at the 2011 Uruguay Open on November 18, 2011. Mayer won the match in straight sets 6-4, 6-3.
Silva did not have any strategy with which he could defend himself as Mayer kept brining his onslaught with his serves and shots. As the first set progressed, Silva did not score any ace and conceded double faults thrice in the
set. Mayer was aggressive the moment the match began as he delivered four aces but his rage made his concede double faults at four occasions in the set.
Silva, ranked at the 122nd spot in the world, had a 61% first serve winning ratio while Mayer, ranked at number 83rd place, secured a 56% first serve winning rate. The Brazilian was playing equally with Mayer
when it came to the first serves. Silva won 65% points from his first serve and reduced his points when he could win only 36% points in the second set.
On the other hand, Mayer won 60% points from the first serve and 63% points from his second. Silva remained at the back foot for he could not save his service games. He could manage to save only a single breakpoint out of the three
he faced. Mayer, however, was quite successful, as he was able to save seven breakpoints out of the eight he faced. The Brazilian was winning his games but he could only win four of them as Mayer won the first set 6-4.
With the second set in progress, Silva’s hopes to enter the semi finals were looking gloomy. He could not deliver any ace in the set and neither did he concede any breakpoint. He had a 67% first serve winning ratio, equal to that
of Mayer’s. Silva won 60% points from his first serve but his service game reduced greatly as he could only win 20% points from his second serve. On the other hand, Mayer won 69% points from his first serve and 50% points from his second.
The 24-year old Mayer was unable to save the only breakpoint he faced but his early lead in the second set did not jeopardize his lead. 27-year old Silva, however, could only save one breakpoint out of the four he faced and remained
in the deficit in terms of winning games. Silva could only won three games as Mayer won the second set 6-3 and earned his place in the semi finals of the 2011 Uruguay Open.
