Leonardo Tavares crushes Joaquin-Jesus Monteferrario in first round qualifier – Uruguay Open 2011 CH
Leonardo Tavares (Portugal) met Joaquin-Jesus Monteferrario (Argentina) in the first round of the 2011 Uruguay Open on Saturday, 12th November. Tavares won the match in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1.
As the first set progressed, Monteferrario delivered the only ace of the set and both players conceded three double faults. Both were a bit offensive in the set as they went on to create a lead into the match. Monteferrario had
a 67% first serve winning ratio while Tavares had a 57% winning rate.
The 26-year old Argentinean was not effective with his serves as he won 48% points from his first serve. Tavares was better with his serves as he won 61% points.
Although Tavares, ranked 826th  in the world, could not deliver any ace, his three double faults did little to hinder his pace. He won more points with his first serve and maintained his dominant position in the set.
Monteferrario won 40% points from his second serve while Tavares had a slightly higher score as he won 47% points. The Portuguese player had a better run with his service games as he won more breakpoints than his opponent did.
Tavares saved two out of his three breakpoints. On the other hand, Monteferrario could save only five breakpoints from his eight he faced. Monteferrario’s low winning rate with his first serve and unsuccessful service games kept
him on the back foot in the first set.
He could have won the set but his pace did not keep him at par with his opponent. The Argentinean, ranked at 610th place in the world, could not reply to any of Tavares’ service games to get a lead. The Portuguese won
the first set 6-3.
With the second set underway, Monteferrario was looking to equalize the match but he did not come even close in taking a lead over his opponent.
Neither of the two players could deliver any ace and played with caution. This is why they did not concede any double fault either.
Tavares secured an 88% first serve winning ratio while Monteferrario maintained a 75% rate. The Portuguese was better with his service games as he won 71% points from his first serves while Monteferrario could only win 53% points.
In the second serve, Tavares won 67% points, which kept him in the lead while the Argentinean could only win 20% points, which further reduced his pace in keeping up with Monteferrario.
Tavares won the only breakpoint he faced giving him the momentum to stay ahead. Monteferrario could not win any of the two breakpoints he faced, which was another reason he remained on the back foot throughout the set.
Monteferrario could only win one game in the second set as Tavares won the set 6-1 and cruised into the next round of the 2011 Uruguay Open.
