Leonardo de Deus clinches Men’s 200m backstroke gold: Day three – Maria Lenk Trophy
Leonardo de Deus met expectations of his supporters as he clinched gold medal of the Men’s 200m backstroke on day three of the 2012 Maria Lenk Trophy in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on Thursday, April 26.
Deus showered his expertise in the four-lap backstroke event and reached the finishing wall for gold medal. He faced strong competition from Thiago Pereira, who was on a verge of winning gold medal but failed to overpower Deus’s effort in the final round.
Deus stayed just a nail ahead of his closest competitor and tapped the finishing end for gold medal by clocking a time of 1 minute and 57.38 seconds.
His title claiming effort remained just 0.01 seconds faster from Pereira, who followed him on the medal rostrum for silver medal by submitting a time of 1 minute and 57.39 seconds.
The second position holder was trailed by Leonardo Santos, who stayed nearly two seconds slower from his former finisher and touched the finishing blockade for bronze medal by reporting a time of 1 minute and 59.36 seconds.
Following that, Laure Manaudou of France proved her mettle for gold medal of the Women’s 200m backstroke.
Manaudou demonstrated her exhausting efforts in the distant backstroke event as she occupied gold medal of the event by reporting a time of 2 minutes and 11.77 seconds.
The second best position of the event was secured by Carolina Henao, who remained almost five seconds slower and tapped the wall with the timing of 2 minutes and 16.12 seconds. Her immaculate effort remained 2.23 seconds faster from her foregoing finisher and hit the wall with an effort of 2 minutes and 18.35 seconds.
Deus was delighted with his impressive effort in the backstroke discipline and stressed that he will work hard to excel in his main event at the upcoming 2012 London Olympic Games.
Furthermore, the position holders were invited on the medal rostrum for awards and accolades at the prize distribution ceremony of the championship.
In addition, the arena applauded ruthless efforts of all finalists in their exclusive events while the championship will conclude on April 29 after the completion of all swimming events in Men and Women’s corner.
