With the 2011 IAAF Combined Events Challenge concluding in Monte Carlo, Cuba, local athlete, Leonel Suarez and his woman counterpart, Tatyana Chernova from Russia emerged as the ultimate winners of the event. The contentment of winning the event was doubled
for the victors as besides getting event trophies, they also earned a hefty winning amount of $ 30,000 each.
Suarez, the 24-year-old Cuban, who had bagged a bronze medal in the decathlon competition at the summer 2008 Olympics, and who finished third on the podium in this year’s World Championships in Athletics in Daegu, adhered to his traditional consistency and
succeeded in obtaining a total of 25,172 points as the season just ended.
Netherlands’ Eelco Sintnicolaas, who could only end up for a fifth place in the World Championships, for bagging a total of 24,772 points, finished second on the podium. His close rival, Mikk Pahapill from Estonia was just behind him with a total of 24,746
points.
In the Women’s category, Chernova, the stellar performer from Russia, who was also last year’s title holder, defended her title for observing an impressive display of skill and talent. In the season for 2011, she won three of the four heptathlon competitions
she lined-up for. Unlike his male counterpart, she was also a clear dominator at the World Championships, where a gold medal was bestowed upon her.
For holding the privilege of standing tall from her competitors, the 23-year-old athlete bagged a total of 20,332 points in the season. It was, thus, for the matchless performance the Russian displayed that her rivals were not even close to her on the points
tally. Jennifer Oeser, the German athlete, who had finished third at the World Championships in Daegu, could only score a total of 19,594 points this season. Natallia Dobrynska, the heptathlete from Ukraine, who could only land for a fifth place in this year’s
