Question:

Leopard Geckos - Stress from Rats?

by  |  earlier

I currently do not own any Leopard geckos, but I will in September. They will be housed in my room, and I also have my rats in my room. They are in a Ferret Nation 142, so the cage is visible from any point in my room. The gecko will be pretty far away from them, but how good is there vision? Will the smell or site of rats scare them? Of course my rats and gecko won't interact, but I just don't know if the presence of rats will freak my gecko out. (I'm not worried about my rats being stressed. They don't even care when my cats watch them. They just peacefully sleep)

Any help is appreciated!

  1. i dont think it will affect them. Look at pet/reptile stores they have tanks next to each other with different animals in them. In my personal experience i have leopard geckos in the same room as a ball phyton and i feed the snake mice and it doesnt affect my leo's.

  2. My Geckos seem as curious about the cats watching them and l*****g their whiskers, as the cats are fascinated by the tempting morsels on the other side of the glass.  lol

This ONLY occurs when I'm cleaning a tank I need a stool for, and the cats hop up to stretch and peek in towards the tank bottom when I'm not on the stool (normally, the cats can't reach the geckos' tanks at all).

Your rats would be just as quick to consider the gecko a snack, so it's a good thing you aren't planning on any interaction between them. But no, just being in view of each other, or in the same room shouldn't bother the gecko in the least.

Congratulations on your choice of a Leopard Gecko for a pet.

"Forewarned is forearmed" as the addage goes. I'm posting a few links below that you might want to check out before you get your geckos. Please note my disclaimer - Though these sites list the use of play/rept sand, I strongly DISAGREE with this.  The number one killer of Leos is impacton by a loose substrate, which leads to costly vet bills, and even death.

I hope this has been helpful.

  3. ROFL I'm getting one in September too. Well the day before. I don't think your gecko will be stressed. Maybe pissed cuz he wants him some of that rat meat ^_-.

  4. There wont be a huge problem as long as they don't come in direct contect with eachother.

  5. i dont think they will but be sure to not feed the baby rats to them they will hurt the
