  1. i think paper towel is the best for a baby leopard gecko .its more easy to clean. if you absolutely want sand you should pick calcisand because calcisand will melt in the gecko's stomach but real sand can hurt the baby gecko it he eats it.

  2. Paper towel is what "baby" leopard geckos should be kept on.

Reptile carpet can contribute to toe loss. The geckos nails can get caught in the fibre.

Many people disagree with substrate, but I will not steer you wrong. Ron Tremper is the top breeder of leopard geckos in the nation, He's been doing it since 1979 and Tremper geckos sell for an average of $600 and up. He wrote the care sheet for his website http://leopardgecko.com/emcare.html and recommends the same substrate.

Add: Calci-sand is the very worst thing to put baby geckos on (or any sand for that matter). If they eat it (and they will) it can cause impaction. It is not digestable regardless of what it claims to be. Calci sand, although it does contain calcium, is still mostly sand, and sand is not digestable, especially in the case of baby geckos.

  3. I use non-adhesive shelf liner.  It is cheap, looks great, easy to clean.  You can buy rolls of it at any store.  Cut to fit.  Paper towel is also very safe, but you'll love the shelf liner--it is rubbery so not slippery and you can wipe up poops with a damp paper towel or throw the whole thing in the wash.  Never use sand or loose substrates which can be eaten and cause impactions.
