Question:

Leopard gecko won't eat crickets anymore?

So my 2 year old leopard gecko Issy was fed on just crickets by her previous owner. I expanded her diet a little more with silkworms as a treat and butterworms and finally mealworms.

The only problem is when the pet store is out of mealworms I buy crickets and she just doesn't like them? She's not bothered with them at all- it's only when it's been 3 1/2 days and she's hungry will she eat them, where as mealworms she'll eat anytime.

Her tail is very thick and she is healthy- so perhaps she just isn't hungry?

But I really think she is off crickets what can I do?

  1. If you don't want to use mealworms due to nutritional content you may want to look into phoenix worms.  They are perfectly fine to use as a staple.  I have heard of many instances where leos just suddenly stop eating crickets.  Its not that odd for their tastes to change out of the blue.  On another note, I haven't done a lot of research on the topic only what little I've come across in my quest for more information on caring for my leo but, putting your gecko into hibernation is something you need to be very knowledgeable about.  Most of the instances I've read about it was something the gecko did by itself.  Its not abnormal but not very common, but if it does happen it involves a number of steps and drastic temperature drops (l50's &  60's).  Like I said I don't know a whole lot about it but it's not something you just wanna try; especially without doing your homework.

  2. keep tryin

  3. You may have just introduced her to foods she enjoys much better than the crickets.

In a way, you've spoiled your Gecko.

  4. Try giving her grasshoppers. Small ones are similiar to crickets, and may catch her interest. Make sure to take the hind legs off, though, or it might be hard for her to catch. I have a 3 year old leopard gecko, and she once completely refused to eat crickets. I turned the temperature lower and she went into a sort of hibernation faze. She didn't eat for almost 2 weeks, but she didn't loose weight. Apparently, it's perfectly normal every now and then. I know it's easy to worry, but it's all natural.
