i really want to get one and ive been reading up on it.

ive read a lot about what substrate to use.

apparently sand causes impaction if they are under 6'', so i was wondering whats best: papertowels or reptile carpet?

  1. It really doesn't matter between papertowels or reptile carpet.

Sand and Calcium sand is very bad for Leopard Gecko's, Calcium sand claims it's digestable but it doesn't just break down! I just got my Leo yesterday and i'm using paper towels at the moment because I spent so much money on mine that I couldn't afford his carpet! Paper towels is completely fine though and i've read so is Newspaper but i'm not too sure on the ink? I don't know if that effect them but i've read on many websites that Newspaper is fine.

Sorry for the long read! Have fun with your Gecko ^_^ They're lovely!

  2. i use organic potting soil..leos are pretty clean animals, they eat their shed. and most use one corner of their cage for a restroom....if you want to send me your email ill send you some pics..i still cant figure how to post pics on here!

  3. It doesn't matter what you use as long as he/she can't swallow if it decides to l**k the floor.

Good substrate for leopard geckos would be white paper towels, Astro-Turf, newspaper sheets ( I prefer them white, so their feet dont get dark. You can get this at any printing office. Usually they'll be willing to hand over the last sheets of a roll.) or Reptile carpets with no felt loose ends or loops that can catch on their toes; or tile.

I like astro-turf or tile for lizards. You can have 2-3 pieces cut the size of the tank and rotate them when you clean so the other one can soak and dry up completely. I would say that you never use sand, 6" or not it can impact the leo and you'll be in for a bunch of trouble.

  4. i think paper towel is the best solution because it's easier to clean. If you absolutely want sand i think you can use calcisand

that will not cause impaction  if your gecko eat some
