Leopards register their first win of the 2011 Currie Cup by defeating Pumas 27 – 1: Rugby news
The South African provincial rugby union side, Platinum Leopards, has registered their first win of the 2011 ABSA Currie Cup competition as they defeated the Pumas side 27 – 15 during a round
four encounter of the tournament at Profert Olen Park, Potchefstroom on Friday, August 5.
The win has also helped the Leopards tally their first points in this year’s Currie Cup tournament. After four matches played so far, they are placed at seventh position with their four points.
Leopards kick started the game and they were in the control of the match from the first whistle. They were also first to put points on the scorecard in the match. Leopards’ winger Danie Dames
scored the first try of the game in the seventh minute. Their fly half Wesley Dunlop followed with his conversion to take their led to the seven points.
Pumas replied strongly through some attacking rugby as they scored their first try of the game in the 12th minute, courtesy of their right-winger Deon Scholtz. Pumas' fly half Coenie
van Wyk failed on the conversion, as they lose a chance to equalise the scores. However, Pumas retained the ball and territory possession as they firmer their grip on the proceedings.
Pumas took the lead through their inside center Dewald Pretorius’s 19th minute try. Van Wyk successfully scored his first conversion of the game to take the scorecard reading 12
– 7. Unfortunately, as it later turned out to be, this was the Pumas last try of the game.
Leopards regained the ball as they slowly convert the possession into the territorial advantage. They press hard in their offence, as they were able to cut the lead back to 2 points, after
Dunlop’s capitalized on the penalty in the 25th minute of the game.
In the remaining quarter of the first half Leopards scored 14 more points as they established their control over the proceedings. For Leopards their flanker Luvuyiso Lusaseni and George Tossel,
scored their two tries in the 29th and 32nd minute of the game, which were followed by Dunlop’s successful conversion.
Both teams left the field at the end of the first half, with scorecard reading, 24 – 12 in the favour of Leopards.
Pumas trailing by 12 points started the second half strongly, however, they repeated made errors and missed some easing scoring opportunities. Van Wyk’s 51st minute penalty reduced
the Pumas lead to 9 points.
In the 58th minute of the game, Dunlop scored his last penalty of the game to take the scorecard reading 27 – 15, which remained the same at the end of the game.
Both teams tried their best to score, but Leopards were able to hold the Pumas offence. However, Pumas also denied Leopards from scoring their try bonus point.
