Leopold Koenig wins the sixth stage of the Tour of Britain 2012
Leopold Koenig of Team NetApp claimed his second victory of the 2102 season after tremendous performance during the sixth stage of the Tour of Britain.
The cyclist crossed the finish-line in a total time of 4 hours, 38 minutes and 2 seconds and occupied the top podium position.
He was delighted after the victory and noted that at least one stage at the British race was his target and he is happy to achieve it with two stages to spare.
"I set out for a stage win target. I knew before that I only had to follow Jon (Tiernan-Locke) because he's strong and it's his home race and he was pretty motivated so I just did it," Koenig briefed.
Jonathan Tiernan-Locke of Team Endura Racing finished 2 seconds behind at the second position with Nathan Haas of Team Garmin-Sharp securing the third spot.
"It did go as planned. I'd played it through in my mind, over and over last night and through the stage,” Jonathan noted.
“Doesn't mean it was easy, we had to really fight to be up the front and there were some dangerous parts on the stage with some cross-winds but it did go as planned and it was a relief to finish it off".
Damiano Caruso of Team Liquigas-Cannondale, Luke Rowe of Team Sky Procycling, Paul Voss of Team Endura Racing, Christopher Jones of Team UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling and Simon Yates of Team Great Britain claimed the next five positions.
Kristian House of Team Rapha Condor wins the first and the second mountains of the race while Jonathan Tiernan-Locke of Team Endura Racing claimed the third and the fourth climbs of the event.
Marcin Bialoblocki of Team Node 4-Giordana claimed the first and the third sprints of the event while Graham Briggs of Team Raleigh-GAC wins the second one.
Jonathan Tiernan-Locke has now jumped up to the first overall position after the stage 6 overall classifications thanks to his second place finish during the stage 2.
Overnight leader, Leigh Howard is now 13 seconds behind the British cyclist at the second overall spot with Nathan Haas of Team Garmin-Sharp, Boy Van Poppel of Team UnitedHealthcare and Damiano Caruso of Team Liquigas-Cannondale securing the next three spots
