I'm looking at an epiphone Les Paul Special II and an epiphone SG special, they are both $170 (I'm on a pretty low budget) Can any one whos played both kinds of guitars tell me which one they think is better. It doesn't have to be the same model or company as the one I said I just want to know which style is typicaly better

  1. It depends on your likings. At 170, you cant expext great things from a guitar. An SG would suit you as a coolo looking guitar but they are a little heavy...Les Pauls can come in many colors and suit your style of playing as well...Les Pauls can also have a more cleaner sound.Sg's tend to be darker and better suited for metal

  2. go to a music shop, and test them both. only you can choose which style is typically better.

personally i like the les paul better though

  3. Hi Jak

We have them at the shop and that is how we gat to evaluate a lot of Gibsons, Fendrs, Martin, Ibanex, Takamine etc....

The Les Paul Special has that big fat old style 1960 rock sound. I had an original 1953 Les Paul and accidently broke the neck and fixed it but it was never the same.

Having said that, the Les Paul has the same look as the old vintage. Compared to the SG Special, no comparison even if they have the same value.

SG neck is rough and very bad. The sound is not too bad but nothing compared to the Les Paul. Even the finish of the SG is c**p compared to Les Paul.

If you like a fat rocky sound like Zeppelin, you will get it with the Les Paul. The SG has a more Black Sabbath sound with no bottom.

    Your choice.....
