Leslie Frazier hired as Minnesota Vikings head coach
The Minnesota Vikings were so pleased with Interim Head Coach Leslie Frazier’s credibility with the players, and his communication and crisis management skills that they decided to hire him as the team’s head coach.
The former National Football League (NFL) cornerback stressed the need for a mentality which puts the team first, and believes that it is only a matter of time before the franchise wins a Super Bowl. He promised to make a critical evaluation of the staff,
roster, and offensive and defensive schemes in order to get the Vikings back into play-off material, after a particularly dismal 6-10 record this season.
The Vikings started out their season 3-7 under head coach Brad Childress before he was fired and replaced by Frazier on 22 November. The 51-year-old interim head coach led them to a 3-3 record for the rest of the season.
"I think we'll be able to look back at these last six weeks and say, 'You know what? That was the beginning of something special,'” Frazier said Monday, during his introductory news conference at Winter Park.
The Vikings started the season out with dreams of winning the Super Bowl looming over every practice session. However, after seeing quarterback Brett Favre playing worse than ever before and then spraining the sternoclavicular joint in his throwing shoulder
on 5 December, the Vikes knew that things weren’t going to turn out as they hoped.
On top of that, the roof of their home stadium - the Metrodome - collapsed following heavy snowfall in Minnesota. That meant that they had two consecutive home games moved, and their game against the Philadelphia Eagles was postponed because of heavy snow
once again. However, this time the game played was at Lincoln Financial Field in Philly.
Team President Mark Wilf said, "We took it very seriously (the coach’s job) and we took a lot of input on this, but clearly Leslie is the right man for the job. He listens and makes good decisions. We saw a lot of that through a lot of the adversity, especially
the last few weeks."
One can just wish Frazier and the rest of the Vikings squad the best of luck for next season. Who knows, they might actually achieve their goal of winning the Super Bowl next year.
