I am 26 years old and was adopted from Colombia when I was 3 months old. My adopted parents are USC and had me naturalized as U.S. citizen in 1985. I met my husband we decided to get married. He is from the Dominican Republic (not a citizen here) We filed for him adj status/perm. res. now I am being questioned about my status.I have a NJ State birth certificate (does say I was born in Colombia). To my knowledge my parents said they had to submit all my naturalization paper work in order to get a birth certificate like this. I also have a driver's license,SSN#, I have voted, received govn't assistance (medicaid b/c I am currently pregnant). My parents can't find all the paper work, only some. The court house where I was naturalized (T.R. NJ) said they have copies of my paperwork. Is this sufficient enough or do I need the file the N565? It's expensive so I was trying to find an easier way. I dont have a passport. No replies insulting my marriage, it's not for the PW

  1. You or your parents lost the paperwork. You will just have to pay to get new paperwork. I don't know about NJ but in other states all you need is to set up residence in that state and apply to have a copy of your birth certificate transfered. No citizenship, green card etc. required. I am sorry you lost your paperwork but you can not expect the US government to make an exception in your case. I certainly do not expect them to make an exceptionin my case if I needed one!

  2. all this paperwork is very annoying, and now very expensive.

can you try to get your passport first? i have to believe that would be less expensive.

i would guess copies from teh courthouse would be enough, but what i would do though, is go to INS office and ask them. they are usually very helpful, just make sure you go there with a list of questions, cuz they will try to get you out as fast as they can, so if you're not sure what to ask, the visit will do you no good.

most offices you have to schedule your visit online, which is not a bad thing, cuz you wont have to wait forever..

    good luck!
