  1. Mutual funds and/or CD's, specially if you don't need the money for something else!

  2. Since you are talking long term with a retirement plan, this one may take a while, but when its time comes, wow, the potential is enormous. PXN is an exchange traded fund that holds some shares in the biggest players in nanotechnology. There are some astounding things they are working on, especially considering that some of the commonly accepted laws of physics seem to work differently when structuring things at the atomic level with individual atoms being put in place. Not all of the component companies, or their uncovered peers for that matter, will survive in the long run, but that is what the diversification of these industry sector ETFs are good for, as in while some are sinking, some are flying, so it averages out favorably.

You will have to be patient with it though. Nanotechnology is still a baby in gestation.

  3. Unless you plan to actively invest, I'd put it in an index fund.

  4. CD will earn you less than $40 per year.

To my mind you should invest agressively to earn more from your small money.
