Lesser-known LPGA stars proving their worth
Lesser-known LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) stars appear to be giving a tough time to big names, as the recent tournaments have witnessed stunning performances from players who were once underrated.
South Korean Na Yeon Choi, who is not as tough a contender as current world number one Yani Tseng or American Paula Creamer, emerged as the most talented player in recent weeks.
Although a professional since 2004, Choi had not been able to prove her worth on the LPGA Tour and faltered in most of the matches she participated in.
However, the 2012 season proved to be a lucky start for her, as she won her major title at the US Women’s Open, held at Blackwolf Run, Kohler.
Another factor that seems to have overshadowed big names is a dramatic shift in the world rankings. Thanks to her victory at the third major tournament of the season, Choi has risen to the second spot in the Women’s World Golf Rankings.
Analysts said that it is a good sign that lesser-known players are proving their mettle on the Tour, which will likely end monotony.
Kiwi Lydia Ko, who belongs to New Zealand and has grabbed one professional title, kicked off the US Open 2012 with plenty of confidence.
Ko fired an overall 300 to tie for the 39th position on the leaderboard.
On the other hand, Lizette Salas of California has also emerged as a rising star on the Tour. She started her first major tournament at Kohler and cheered her fans in the first round after she posted a near-flawless 69.
Analysts said that finishing tied for the 32nd position at the major tournament proved to be very encouraging for the young star.
Salas started playing golf when she was very young. With the assistance from father, who encouraged her join golf as full-time career, the California native soon made a name for herself.
“Graduating from high school was an accomplishment in my neighborhood. When I was young, I didn’t have role models I looked up to in my community. But I now feel I can do something about that and help change that situation, especially in my neighborhood,” Salas shared in one of her interviews.
