Question:

Lesser of two evils – Road Rage vs Inattentive Driving?

I am having an ongoing dispute with my girlfriend. Well, when it comes to driving, she is a bit scary. It has almost reached the point where we are going to have to take separate cars to go anywhere. She comments, gestures, and so on, at other drivers like as though it was her responsibility to straighten them out. She often makes the same mistakes as the other drivers. In other words, she feels anyone that drives like her, is an idiot, and does not deserve a driver’s license.

More than once I have got out of the car and walked home because I could not deal with her behavior. If I drive she does the same from the passenger seat.

So I ask the Yahoo community. Who is the grater danger on the road? Is it the sort of half zoned out driver that is not watching the road, or the road raging moron that is shouting?

So is more likely to go to jail? Is it the “road raged” or the “road zoner”

  1. She would not be from Dublin, Ohio would she? You just described every person that lives there. What is worse is beside the point, it is just very unfortunate (you asked for the opinions) that there are people in this world period that think the world revolves around them and there are plenty of them. It is an unfortunate truth of todays society.

  2. I really see no difference at all but I do see that see needs some help either from her doctor and a driving school that can both explain what she is doing wrong or what she will do wrong in time.

  3. Inattentive driving

  4. Personality disorders, holy-er-than-though attitude, hypocrite, selfish, entitlement mentality.

Dealt with this before. They do not respond or even aknowledge critisism. They actually believe that they don't do the very things they hate others doing.Best thing to do is record her raging monolog with a hidden device, then play them back to her when she is not practicing what she preaches.

Tell her she needs to lead by example,as we all should do. any time you see her doing something stupid in the car, ask her if she would like it if you drove that way. Tell her to lead by example. That you want to drive just like her.

Her behavior is probably consistent through everything she does, even outside the vehicle. Spend more time w/ her and you'll see. It's ok for her to do stuff but not others.

Road rage is the lesser of 2 evils, cuz you have to focus more in order to have it.

  5. Tell her to get a life and come down to earth NOW! Its drivers like her that kill people!! If i were you i would not ride with her! I have a neighbour like that and she has had the police at her door due to her attitude!! She was also charged with assault!! She does just what you friend does!! People lke that make me and others SICK.. Put a stop to this before its too late. She sounds to me like one of the worst drivers on the road!!!She probably thinks she OWNS the road too!!

  6. It seems to me that she doesn't have a problem as much as a driver, but mostly as a person.

Basically , as you said, she thinks she has got THE right. I recently talked to a psychologist about similar matters (I was doing research for my article about people ignoring the highway code and road ragers, etc.) More often than not your friend's reactions are triggered by fear - it may be fear from somebody taking up her place and/or space - on the road, in the supermarket. Subsequently, she asserts herself onto her environment - again, on the road by a road rage, gestures, hazardous manoeuvres, or at the supermarket's check-out.

In that sense the greater danger is coming from a road rage. If somebody's not watching the road, you may as well say they won't retaliate when you accidentally do something stupid, they just don't see you or couldn't be bothered. With a raging person you just don't know, they're unpredictable and, they may not admit it, but their ability to concentrate and drive properly takes the toll with growing rage.

In other words you may watch out for a zoner and prevent the worst. But you may watch a rager all the time and it wouldn't matter when they switch to a "I've got the right" mode.

    Good luck.
