Question:

Lesson Plan for High School Students?

I'm teaching a course this summer to high school juniors.. it's an introduction to law and the american justice system. I'm trying to think of some fun ways to do it (the class is only 3 weeks long).. and so far I think I'm going to conduct a mock trial, maybe show a movie to illustrate the judicial process (I was thinking 12 Angry Men, but I don't know if the kids will like it.. or I might record a Law & Order episode), talk about some current legal issues today (myspace, facebook, etc.).. can anyone give me some more suggestions to get the students involved? I don't want them to be bored. Thanks!

  1. I have taught 12 Angry Men and though at first they are put off by the lack of action and it being black and white, they eventually become fascinated by the voting.

    It's worth a shot.

Also, LSAT prep books have interesting case studies with multiple choice questions that provide good discussions. Also there are pictorial crime who-done-it books  that work.

  2. what you can maybe do is teach them a little about the law and things like that, a movie and then have them act it out. but before that have them take a test on the things you have taught them.

  3. You can take them to a trial or have them follow one through the press. Also, invite local attorneys - especially those involved in children's rights - to come and speak to them.

Also, look for cases of teens on trial. The Robin Hills Murders might greatly interest them. HBO made a documentary on them and there is at least one book written about it.

  4. Have you considered having a Police Officer come and speak to the class on responsibilities of citizens and the role of Police in law enforcement?
