I'm the librarian at a 4-5 grade building and would really like to hear your ideas for some fun lesson plans. Anyone out there know where I can go to get lesson plans for library time with my students?

  1. "Find-the-book" game. Give the titles of some books and have a competition to see who will be the first to find them in the stacks. I find that high schoolers have very little familiarity with the library. Help them to understand how your library is set up physically so they can use it on their own.

  2. (1) Choose an author and read several of his/her works...also incorporating activities to correspond to the stories...

    (2) Set up a competition for reading the largest number of books...I used a train (for example) When a student read a book, he would illustrate the book and write a short report about the book (include title, author, publication date, setting, main characters, short plot details) This report would be completed on a preprinted train car pattern.  You supply the engine and then the students add the train cars as they complete the books and reports...

    (3) Read "Thomas' Snowsuit" by Robert Munche...Have the students construct a puppet show using popsicle sticks to hold the characters...my students LOVED this activity...

  3. My wife has a library sciences site with many lessons and other resources for you to use.  Check out the programming and planning section and the book activities section.
