Lesya Tsurenko retires to let Urszula Radwanska into 2nd qualifying round – Qatar Ladies Open 2012
World number 85, Urszula Radwanska, progressed to second qualifying round of the Qatar Ladies Open, contested in Doha, with Lesya Tsurenko of Ukraine, retiring from the match during the second set. The fourth seed Pole was leading
the scores 6-2, 1-0 at the time of her rival’s retirement.
Both players were playing their maiden professional-career match and unfortunately it ended in a disappointing fashion with none of them leaving the arena with a smile. Radwanska was concerned about the injury of her opponent and
didn’t celebrate her triumph. Crowd was also concerned about the health of the Ukrainian contender who looked in miserable state.
The Ukrainian tennis ace was in pain at the start of the match as well but she decided to play through the twinge which was apparently not a correct decision. She started off the match with a successful serve game and so did her
opponent. Radwanska picked up the momentum and broke serve to take lead. Both players traded breaks in the fifth and sixth game of the opening set to push the scores at 4-2.
It was a one-sided encounter. The Pole was dominating the proceedings throughout the match and the injury-stricken Ukrainian participant was not able to move freely across the court. With limited manoeuvres, Tsurenko could only
register two games win, whilst her opponent bagged the first set on the other end.
Things were not looking fruitful for the Ukrainian but she decided to continue with the encounter. Spectators gave her a round of applause for her enthusiasm to continue the game in such pain. Radwanska won four consecutive points
on her serve and bagged the first game of the second set before the things got worse for the Ukrainian. She received treatment from her physio at the sidelines but wasn’t able to resume the proceedings, limping her way to the exits.
Radwanska advances to the second qualifying round. She faces-off against the winner of the match between Alla Kudryavtseva and Andreja Klepac, which will be played later tonight. She needs to perform well in order to achieve some
points and help herself climb few ranks to break into the Top-64 players of the world for Olympics direct entry.
