Minnesota traded Dave Winfield to the Cleveland Indians for a player to be named later before the season was officially canceled, so no player was named. To settle the deal, the executives of the teams went to dinner, and Cleveland picked up the tab, meaning Winfield had been dealt for dinner...

What are your thoughts....?

  1. Wow, Dave had a great career too.  That must have been one expensive turkey dinner!

The only funny trade I have in mind was Philles Starting Pitcher Kyle Kendrick being traded to Japan.  He hella took it seriously like an MLB could trade a player to another country.

  2. How about a perfect game being thrown from a relief pitcher? Happened with the Red Sox in 1917 as Babe Ruth started the game and walked the leadoff batter. He didn't like the call, argued, got tossed out and by all accounts, slugged the Ump. In came relief pitcher Ernie Shore. The runner was caught stealing and Shore retired the next 26 batters for a perfect game. So, when is a perfect game, perfect when you face only 26 batters, when Shore pitches, of course. And Ruth slugs the Ump.

  3. How bout the dodgers trading Pedro Martinez for....DELINO DESHIELDS?? come on now... Then again, i could fill dozens of posts about how ridiculous the dodgers are.

  4. Can't remember the exact player, but several years ago, a player was traded to the Mets I believe for a player to be named later. At the end of the season they never gave anything so gave the team back the same player.

  5. Nolan Ryan to the Angels for Jim Fergosi.

Sorry ya'll, I go to school in Texas, so I just HAD to suggest this one. :)

  6. ^^^Yee, Bay Area on Y!A. ^^^^

I agree with the guy above me, Kendrick was hella surprised.

  7. Babe Ruth was traded for the coaches rent

    BEST ANSWER ME!!!!!

  8. Except he wasn't traded, his contract was sold.

    Don't believe everything on Wikipedia.

He was sold to Cleveland on August 31, nearly three weeks *after* the strike began, not July 31 like the wiki article states. (I'm assuming that's where you got the info, I found the same thing there as what you said).

  9. John Kruk once traded his uniform number for two cases of beer -- I forget if it was an in-season or off-season deal. But the other player ended up getting released, and Kruk drank all the beer, so it was a rather sad story after all.

(This according to Kruk on Letterman or some other late-night talk show, circa late 1993, when the Phils made their World Series appearance. The "sad story" was his punchline.)
