get an official USGA handicap index below 2, register and qualify for the US Open, WIN IT...and youre on the tour

The only thing that can hold you back in golf is not being good enough.  You can Monday qualify for most events. Get in and win the tournament.  Its what makes the game so great.  And dont get too excited.  There are thousands of dudes in this country who can shoot 4 under on a 7400 course.  So keep working hard!  good luck!

you can enter all kinds of professional tournaments after declaring yourself a pro, there is most likely a mini tour event in your state.

Once you have an official handicap, and are down around scratch or less, then you could have a crack at Q-School. I think it costs about 5K in the states (and is 6 rounds), but I know it is in October in Oz and is about 1800. If you do well in Q-School, then you will either get your card for the main tour, or if you did not finish high enough, the second tier tour. Your card will give you exemptions into various tournaments during the course of the year.
